Matko Trebotić’s painting cycle Land and Light is an echo of his installation Land of My Land, exhibited in 1981 in Düsseldorf – composed of soil from the Dalmatian island of Brač, paintings, and reconstructed floor plans of a Romanesque church. The land was ritually ‘blessed’ by his friend Joseph Beuys. The continuity of the artist’s interest in soil permeability and materiality, as well as its historical associations, emanates from these works.
